Mitchell Johnson puts Ashes glory ahead of childhood Wimbledon champion ...

Johnson, once again the fastest bowler on the planet following a recent resurgence, has been recalled to Australia's team for the Ashes opener

Ace: Mitchell Johnson

Mitchell Johnson spent his childhood dreaming of being Wimbledon champion - but now Ashes glory tops his bucket list.

Johnson, once again the fastest bowler on the planet following a recent resurgence, has been recalled to Australia's team for the Ashes opener at The Gabba in a bid to rough up England's batsmen.

But ahead of what will be only his fifth Test in two years, the 32-year-old has told how the booming balls he envisaged careering at opponents were of the tennis variety until his late teens.

Johnson revealed: 'Wimbledon was my goal growing up in Queensland. I remember getting a T-shirt from my grandparents, passed on by a family friend who had gone to watch the tournament.

'That made me want to play there, and it was tennis all the time.

'At the age of 13-14 I had to decide whether to move to Brisbane to take it more seriously but I didn't want to leave my family. I was always a pretty shy kid.'

Cricket took over and at 17 he was unearthed by Dennis Lillee at a Pace Australia cricket camp.

Fifteen years on, becoming an Ashes victor is what he craves.

He said: 'When I first went to England for The Ashes in 2009 I pumped it up a bit too much, so now if I get the chance I aim to enjoy it.'
